So, what does this mean for the front desk person of a salon? Let me explain. The typical responsibilities of a front desk person are the following:

Handling a high volume of inbound calls
Scheduling appointments
Excellent customer service skills
Handling salon service transactions

These duties are really important. But, as times change, we need to start evolving the front desk's responsibilities. The front desk of the future will be very different; it will be more of a social experience between the salon and its customers. Customers are starting to demand convenience, by wanting their information accessible from any salon. The front desk person of the future would have the ability to find their customer on a social networking site like Myperfectsalon.com and pull up the customer's salon social profile. This will enable the front desk person and the salon to engage with their customers on a whole new social level. Also, the front desk person would be expected to update the salon's blog/services/notifications/photos/team video clips/offers/events on the site for customers to view. They would also be responsible for forwarding customer feedback to management. Why is this going to happen? It's because customers are becoming more aware of technology. This will also allow salons to start bridging the gap between themselves and their customers.

Technorati Tags: salon owner,salons,beauty industry

That really got me thinking about the salon industry in general. Now, more than ever, salon owners will need to show the world what makes them special. In a time where everyone's stress level is being increased by the economy, loss of jobs, medical bills, and other financial problems, there will always be a place where people can go relax and feel good, right? "I'm A Salon Owner" is a campaign that encourages salon owners to never give up on making people feel and look beautiful. We encourage salon owners to show off their salons style and show the world what makes them different. Come and join the fun showing off your salon..whether you're a big or small salon...it all starts with you!

Technorati Tags: salon owner,beauty industry,hairstylist,spa

I know I'm Not On Time, But!!

Is it just me but....how many times has this happen to you? You have an appointment with your stylist, and you arrive there on time, but for some reason your stylist is running 5..No..10..No..30 minutes behind schedule. I wonder if the stylist or salon ever stops to think what's going on in the customers mind (who is waiting). Hmm...let's see. They're probably thinking:

Why am I waiting so long; are they talking on the phone?
I can't believe that I drive 30 minutes for this.
Every time...they always have an excuse why they're running late.
I know they're not taking a lunch now!
I don't think this salon is very professional.
I know that other person didn't just go in front of me!
No tip for them today.
Why isn't anyone letting me know why I'm having to wait?
I like it here..but not that much!

These are just some of the things that customers think about when they are waiting! So the "rule of thumb" is to be very aware of your client's appointment and be on time.
For all you stylists reading this, here are some helpful tips for being "On time".

What is "on time"? People who are always on time are really people who arrive early every day..except when things just go wrong. And hey...things will go wrong.
Get enough rest. Sometimes if you have a problem getting up early, maybe you should try going to bed earlier.
Give yourself a realistic amount of time between appointments. I think this is truly a big problem today, because everyone is so concerned about booking, and double booking appointments just to get that money. They sometimes forget that each customer needs time for the service, and the conversational experience.
Be open to your salon owners preferences. Does your salon manager/owner want you to be in at a set time everyday? If so, you should make it a point to "make it happen".
Communication is key. If you're running behind schedule, let the customer know personally what's going on.

Technorati Tags: Salons,Salon owners,Hairstylist,beauty industry

And also check to see if they had a good looking ad or not. Wow, times have really changed! We are still trying to find solutions for our everyday problems, but the way we get that information has totally changed. Tools like search engines seem to answer almost all of our questions. But what ever happened to the experience of looking thru the pages and seeing what really attracted you? What do you do NOW when you need to find a salon? Do you still run to the YellowPages? Or if you’re a business, do you still buy ad space with them? From a financial business perspective, why should you have to pay for listing directory information, when people can easily find you using search engines? Some things should just be FREE for Salons and Spas!
Why do salons go to providers that really don’t know or care about their industry? I believe people tend to do these things because mostly we are creatures of habit. We don't mean to, but in reality, we do the same stuff that other people have done for years. But, have you ever stopped to think if this really makes sense? I mean...you are feeding money to a company that really doesn't understand what you are about. Ask yourself...Why??? And some companies are just about, "What are all the different things we can charge them for"? Other companies will even charge salons for just the basic listing information like the following (just to name a few):

Upload Logo
Pictures
Website link

Salon owners, I think it's time for the game to change! You can reclaim the way you advertise your business. We all made those companies who they are today, and I sometimes think they forgot that along the way. Why would you pay exorbitant monthly fees to just list your salon's information on YellowPages, when you can get all those features plus many more for Free!!! What are your thoughts?

Technorati Tags: salon owners,spa owners
